Our patients are treated by a licensed Physical or Occupational Therapist who has studied the Leduc method of Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) for the treatment of lymphedema.

lymphedema treatmentOur comprehensive approach begins with a free consultation. As necessary, treatment includes manual lymph drainage, multilayered bandaging, exercise, the fitting of compression garments, and instructions in all aspects of self-care.

As necessary, patients are seen for follow-up care, a review of their self-care program, and evaluation of the fit of their compression garments to assure maximum benefits.

Elyce Shwom OTR/L and Monica Moskowitz PT, each with 30 years experience in their respective fields, are the owner-operators of the practice. Contact them at (516) 660-3911.

Lymphedema

Your body’s lymphatic system is part of your immune system, which protects you against infection and disease. It includes your spleen, thymus, bone marrow, lymph nodes, and lymph channels as well as your tonsils and adenoids.

The principal function of the lymphatic system is to maintain the blood volume by returning fluid and proteins that flow from the blood capillaries to the tissues, back to the general circulation. With impairment of the lymphatic system these proteins and fluid are not adequately drained which can lead to the condition known as lymphedema.

Symptoms

Swelling of part of your arm or your entire arm or leg, including your fingers or toes. A feeling of heaviness or tightness in your arm or leg. Restricted range of motion in your arm or leg. Aching or discomfort in your arm or leg. Recurring infections in your affected limb. Hardening and thickening of the skin on your arm or leg. Although there is no cure for lymphedema, patients can find relief through Complete Decongestive Therapy, or CDT. CDT includes manual drainage of excess lymphatic fluid, exercise, and multi-layered bandaging followed by the use of compression garments. The use of such garments helps maintain the positive results of CDT. Decrease of volume generates pain relief and improves body image. Control of lymphedema helps avoid the repeated occurrence of cellulites, an infection characterized by red, tender, swollen and often oozing skin.

What is Reiki?

ReikiMany ancient cultures, including the Japanese, Chinese, Indians, and the Egyptians, embraced the belief that life energy flowed through the body, deeply affecting our bodies, minds, and emotions. Current research strongly suggests that energy does extend throughout and beyond the physical body, and that disruptions or imbalances in its flow correlate to physical, mental, and emotional illnesses. The healing art of Reiki (pronounced “RAY-key”) addresses these imbalances to support your good health and well-being.

Reiki is a Japanese word meaning universal life energy. It is a nonintrusive method of hands-on healing that taps into the energy referred to by philosophers and martial artists as ki in Japan, chi in China, and prana in India. The practice of Reiki is based on the teachings of a Japanese man, Mikao Usui, who taught and practiced Reiki in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Research into the source of Usui’s work points to ancient Buddhist sutras and teachings of great Eastern masters, as well as his own meditation practice. Usui put his inspiration to good use — over the next century Reiki spread throughout Japan, and then the world.

Reiki is not massage, hypnosis, or a tool for diagnosing illness. Reiki is a technique that addresses both chronic and acute conditions, gently and powerfully promoting balance among all the body’s systems and the normal regenerative processes of the body and mind.
